My favorite food is appetizers. No joking…could eat them all day! So no surprise my favorite food at Applebees would be their Chicken Wonton Appetizers! BUT, at $6.99 for four and then after tax and tip, you end up spending $2.50 PER MINI TACO! Not a bad price if you’re having one or two but we wanted a TON so we decided to make our own recipe at home. Now the reason this slaw is called “Hubby Approved” is because my darlin’ babe doesn’t like ANYthing (I’m not joking) so there is not a lot of vegetables he’ll eat (three actually I think).

Applebee’s Copycat Wonton Appetizers

  • 1/2- 1 package of wonton wrappers
  • 1 cup of oil (or enough cover the wonton when cooking)
  • 2 large chicken breasts; cooked and chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Hubby Approved Asian Slaw

  • 1 bag of coleslaw mix (without sauce)
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper finely chopped
  • I green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1/2 cup Newman’s Low-Fat Ginger Sesame Dressing
  • 1/2 TBS sesame oil
  • Juice of 1-2 limes

As you are cooking your chicken (we just cooked in a little bit of olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper), assemble the slaw ingredients in a bowl. When both chicken and slaw are ready, pour oil in a small sauce pan and heat to medium.

Using tongs, take one wonton wrapper and cook for about 5 seconds each side then fold in half and cook another 10 seconds. Immediately remove from pan and put onto a cooling rack or paper towels to absorb the access oil (we used a metal rack propped up on the ends). Take your cooked wonton shells and add a scoop of chicken then a layer of slaw. Drizzle a little bit of lime juice and serve right away with lime for garnish.

I have to say, I was loving this slaw! We had leftovers so we were eating it as a dip with chips (closest Hubby will get to pico de gallo), and then the next day we ate it like a salad with our leftover’s from Lazy Lasagna Soup! If you have any wonton wrappers left over, we used ours to make Lasagna Cup Bites…soooo good!
